Tim McGraw first started teaching music lessons in Northern Virginia back in the mid 90’s at various music stores. After several years he branched out on his own and started teaching out of his two bedroom apartment. Luckily, he had great neighbors in the apartment below him, who didn’t mind the noise. At that time the company was formed and given the name Alter Ego Guitar Studio. Tim had acquired over 80 students per week working out of the apartment and decided it was time to move into a commercial location.
In July 1999, Tim moved his business out of the apartment and into a commercial shopping center in Herndon, VA. The name was then changed to Alter Ego Music Studio. The studio had 15-20 instructors who provided lessons to over 300 students per week in a variety of instruments including guitar, piano, bass, drums, woodwind and strings. The store also rented band instruments and sold quality guitars, amps and keyboards. In 2004, Alter Ego Music Studio expanded into the San Diego area into a brand new 2400sf store. The name was changed to Alter Ego Music, Inc. for the San Diego location. The new store was a copy of the Virginia store but on a much larger scale.
In 2006, Tim moved back to Virginia following the passing of his father. Ego Music opened it’s location in Redmill Commons Shopping Center in 2008, at which time we started offering music lessons for students in-home, office or studio.
